Daller: But he has albums upstairs, photos. Theres one here, theres one there, and theres one in the other room. So this house tells a particular story, a long history, but it cant tell the history of the other houses because they were so different. And while I was up there, I was sent up to work with Father Tom. Burke: I think, what was left of it, the sons moved to California and they opened up a Scalamandr in California. And it was quite difficult to maintain the big house we were living in. And not only that, we got a lot of manureI used to have it to put on all the gardens and to put on the fields and whatnot. I was born right in the hospital across the street, and grew up 90% of my time on Staten Island until I became old enough and I joined the military. Burke: Yes. Or was that brother Ed? She was a nasty old lady! But that was funny. And the fact that somebody could save a house like this, and want to show it to people, and let people hear about the history behind it? Because, now, they cant tear it down. Burke: And all the others like it, well, I can remember, on the other side of the pond over there, going alongthe mansions that were over there. She said, You saw her in your dream. I said, Holy shit, I said, you think that was her? She said, It could have been her. I said, Then she went like that and chased me out of her house. Burke: And he was one of the top portrait painters in Madrid. And I said, well, Im going to retire. Yes, Mrs. Mackey. So every time she wants to go riding, she has to go all the way to New Jersey, ride her horse, and then come all the way back. It feels like home, because thats what its been. Burke: Like a locket.
